The front porch was the last to be done. The ceiling is
about 12 feet high. The bottom 8 feet of the walls was covered
in cream coloured raised wallpaper, and the top 4 feet was just an opened
space. This opened space shared a wall with the den and office
upstairs.

The original wood floor was covered with grey carpet, but was in pretty
good shape after all these years. Rob sanded
the floor by hand, then stained and varnished it. He was able to
find a stain very similar to the rest of the house, it just took forever
(or what seemed like forever) to dry.
I bought an all natural Jute rug to go there once everything is
completed. Now I want the rest of the house done...maybe later

Like I said above, the top 4 feet of the front porch was opened and was
essentially a complete waste of space. Rob had the idea to
make built-in shelving for the TV, stereo and other junk in the den. This
meant that he would have to extend the walls to ceiling in the porch.
He had to beat through two layers of original thin straping and plaster walls to
get to the drywall shared with the den above it. He also removed some of the
panelling to expose the original beams.

We wanted to do something different on the walls so we tried Venetian
Plaster which produces a 3 dimensional textured surface. It's
fairly easy to do....you trowel the plaster on in 2 coats, letting the
first coat dry for about 4 hours. After 24 hours you can give
it a more polished shiny look by burnishing it. Click
here for
more details.
We're planning to put raised wallpaper on the "new" walls. We've chosen
a pattern resembling old tin ceiling tile which we'll probably paint to give
it a rustic look....stayed tuned for that part.
